The vineyard found on the Cannubi hill is the company’s crown jewel. If there were a Grand Cru classification in Piedmont similar to the one existing in Burgundy (France), the Cannubi (or Cannubio or Canubbio) would be considered one of the few, real Grand Crus present in the Barolo area and on the high-quality wine scene.
This vineyard has a long history: it is the most famous and renowned cru mentioned in ancient documents since the 1700s. The oldest preserved bottle in the Langhe area is found in Bra, owned by the Manzone family and bearing the words “Cannubi 1752”; this precious witness is the proof that this vineyard was already appraised before the appearance of the Barolo*: the name Cannubi is mentioned long before.
This vineyard has truly unmistakable characteristics. The absolute prestige of the grapes grown along this hill is due to a particular composition of the land: in fact, it is the only terrain in the entire district of Barolo production containing Tortonian and Helvetian soil, belonging to two different geologic eras.
The high sand content conveys intense fragrances to the wines, with clear fruited notes of cherry and plum, and herbal notes of tobacco, rose, and violet. The alkalinity and strong calcium content confer a final touch of finesse and elegance.
Despite the high percentage of sand, and grades of loam and clay, the potassium, magnesium and microelements give it an intense and bright color, as well as high polyphenol concentration.
Finally, the presence of fine sand and the high content of clay and limestone convey unique characteristics to the Nebbiolo grape bunches destined to production of Barolo Cannubi, which have a refined and polished appearance.
All such natural properties guarantee an exclusive quality and unique style to the Barolo, which the Damilano family has always been able to interpret passionately and rigidly.
